PORON®

PORON PORON cellular urethanes have been a major component of Stockwell Elastomerics, Inc.'s product line since the 1980s. We inventory and fabricate PORON cellular urethane from .012" to .500" thick and ranging in densities from extra soft / slow rebound formulas to very firm formulas with greater force deflection properties than certain solid rubber compounds.

What are some key benefits of PORON cellular urethane?

  • The low compression set properties of PORON cellular urethanes - less than 2% at 73°F and less than 10% at 158°F make PORON material an ideal gasketing material for many indoor enclosure applications.
  • The energy absorbing properties of PORON combined with low compression set make it an ideal material for shock isolation of hand-held devices.
  • The consistent microcellular structure makes gasket fabrication predictable, no shrinkage after die cutting and edge concavity is reduced.
  • The as-cast thickness tolerance is less than 10% for .062" through .500". This contributes to predictable performance in gasket and cushioning components. Beta gauge thickness readings are available on individual lots upon request.
  • Readily accepts most pressure sensitive adhesives, as PORON does not contain any plasticizers and the integral skin surface provides a clean, readily bonded surface.

When would PORON not be recommended?
Outdoor enclosures subjected to rain and temperature extremes may not be sealed properly with PORON gaskets. Conditions where PORON may be flexed or repeatedly compressed and relaxed in standing water may cause water to be wicked into the gasket. Temperatures below -20°F will cause PORON to stiffen noticably, and PORON is not recommended for constant temperatures above 158°F. Outdoor conditions may be better served with silicone sponge or high grade neoprene or EPDM sponge materials.

What is PORON®?
PORON cellular urethane is produced by Rogers Corporation. These high density, flexible, microcellular urethane foam materials are manufactured by continuously casting and curing mechanically mixed formulas to the desired thickness. Some points to note about PORON:

  • High Density - PORON standard formulas have densities ranging from 15 to 30 pounds per cubic ft.
  • Microcellular Structure - The average cell size for PORON is about 100 microns and is extremely uniform.
  • Open Cell - Despite the appearance of the material, PORON is open cell, meaning there are small openings between each cell. When compressed approximately 35%, PORON gaskets can seal to serve as a light duty moisture gasket.
  • Polyurethane - PORON urethane is a unique polyether / polyester urethane blend.
