Conductive Grounding Pads are fabricated for the Rocket Motor Industry Some requirements for special gaskets, large silicone rubber gaskets and cushioning pads and special constructions can not be produced by conventional rubber molding and die cutting. Visitors expecting to see a typical gasket manufacturer often remark about the number of large, heavy duty tables in the custom rubber fabrication section of Stockwell Elastomerics, Inc.’s production facility. The specialized rubber fabrication is usually being done for customers in the aerospace ground support equipment, telecommunication equipment and process industries. Here are just a few examples:

Rocket Motor Pads
Rocket motor mounting pads or Conductive Grounding Pads are multi-layered constructions of silicone sponge rubber and carbon filled conductive silicone rubber. We combine our knowledge of silicone rubber and bonding adhesives with our experience in rubber fabrication. Layers of closed cell silicone sponge rubber are laminated to the specified size, then surfaces are coated or laminated with a layer of carbon filled conductive silicone rubber. Pads as large as 2" thick x 48" wide x 96" long have been custom built for manufacturers of solid fuel rocket motors and launch systems.

Spliced Silicone Rubber Gaskets
Telecommunications base stations and power generation equipment often require custom rubber fabrication. They may be housed in enclosures with access doors and openings exceeding 36" x 72". Silicone foam and silicone sponge gaskets are often specified for long term sealing properties. To reduce material consumption, Stockwell Elastomerics, Inc. has set up UV curing stations for splicing corners with specially formulated silicone rubber adhesives. The bond is secure and flexible; 45° miter splices, straight butt splices or keyed splices are available on flange widths 1" wide or more.

Special Laminations
At least 80% of the silicone gaskets, PoronTM cellular urethane gaskets and cushioning pads and sheet rubber materials are provided with a pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Also, we are frequently asked to laminate various material in order to achieve specific mechanical, electrical or thermal properties, enhance the characteristics of a material. Examples of this type of custom rubber fabrication include:

  • Laminating thin ultra high molecular weight polyolefin film to Poron cellular urethane for cushioning and mounting pads with low coefficient of friction and enhanced durability.
  • Laminating fiberglass reinforced Teflon onto silicone sponge rubber for high temperature cushioning.
  • Carbon filled conductive surface coating of closed cell silicone sponge rubber for silicone gaskets with ESD properties for the integrated circuit handling and test chamber industry.
