EMI Gaskets / EMI Shielding Gaskets
Stockwell Elastomerics manufactures custom EMI gaskets, EMI RFI gaskets, EMI shielding gaskets and other gaskets from various EMI shielding materials to specification.
Managing EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) is a common task for engineers designing electronic devices. Even the most well designed systems generate some level of noise. One of the best ways to protect from unwanted emissions is to contain the noise within an enclosure. The enclosure lid needs to make good contact with the enclosure itself to create a complete conductive path. Stockwell has several materials available to be custom cut or molded into EMI gaskets. The nickel graphite or silver coated particles within the EMI gasket material polymer creates the conductive path. The polymer, usually silicone, also may serve as an environmental seal to protect from dust and moisture.
Materials for EMI Gaskets
Electrically conductive gasket materials are typically specified for EMI applications. Commercial applications often specify nickel coated graphite filled silicone for its cost savings; most commercial EMI gasket applications can be satisfied with Ni/C products such as SNE-554, EC-2130, EC-2040 or SNEF-60. Military / aerospace EMI gaskets often call for silver coated aluminum to meet MIL-G-83528C specifications. Military or aerospace may also use fluorosilicone instead of silicone for its fuel and chemical resistance.View the EMI Management Materials page for more information on the materials used in EMI shielding gaskets and EMI/RFI gaskets.
Combination Silicone Sponge and Wire Mesh EMI Shielding Gaskets
For large enclosures and cabinets with uneven surfaces or low closure forces, .125” thick to .250” thick closed cell silicone sponge gaskets may be needed for effective environmental sealing. R10470-M medium density closed cell silicone sponge and HT800 medium density silicone foam are most frequently specified for the environmental gasket. Gaskets are normally supplied with a high strength pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive.
Monel Mesh in .125” x .125” wide up to .250” x .125” wide is bonded to the inside or outside gasket edge to provide a relatively low cost and reliable EMI shielding gasket with long term weather sealing. The Monel Mesh is constructed from woven .0045” wire that meets QQ-N-281.
Aluminum mesh (AMS 4182) or tin plated copper clad steel wire (ASTM B520) are available on special order.
Prototype EMI Gaskets
With in-house water jet cutting capability, Stockwell Elastomerics is able to supply prototype EMI gaskets from conductive compounds to enable testing and final confirmation of the correct EMI shielding compound and configuration.
Molded EMI Shielding Gaskets
Stockwell Elastomerics molds many of these conductive silicone rubber compounds in our in-house custom molding facility. Molded gaskets allow the designer to add sealing ribs and other performance enhancing features to optimize environmental sealing and EMI shielding properties. Stockwell Elastomerics has a broad range of compounds that meet MIL-G-83528B classifications for electrically conductive EMI shielding gaskets.
